World Environmental Health Day 2023

World Environmental Health Day, observed annually on September 26th, is a global reminder of the critical need to address environmental challenges and their impact on public health. This day serves as a call to action to safeguard our planet for future generations here in Ghana and other parts of the world.

The theme for last year was “Standing up to protect everyone’s health each and every day” underscoring the interconnectedness of our environment and health. Human impact on the environment has become a global concern in the last decade. As we continue to grapple with the consequences of climate change, pollution, and deforestation, it’s crucial to recognise that the state of our environment directly affects our well-being. Ghana, with its rich biodiversity and natural resources, also faces environmental challenges, such as improper waste management, deforestation, illegal mining practices and others.

It is in the light of these that we at the TRRS observed this all-important day with some activities developed around this year’s theme. Students watched some selected educational videos on how to protect the environment in their classrooms after which they had discussions facilitated by their teachers on what they can do in their own small ways to champion this course. Some students also made posters and wrote poems centred on the theme.

World Environmental Health Day serves as a reminder that our planet’s health is inseparable from our own. By taking collective action and prioritizing environmental sustainability, we can create a healthier and more resilient future for Ghana and the entire world. Let’s pursue a cleaner, greener, and healthier planet.
